We just put SMC 4.5 on our ASA a few days ago, and this issue is rearing its head again, and im trying to find out what the heck is going on so i can put this one to bed so we dont have to deal with manually fixing/repairing the vpn adapters at every SMC update on every laptop we have.Īt first i thought it was a permissions issue. this seems to only happen after an auto-upgrade has already failed on the device.

If i dont go into the cli utility, the MSI will fail during the install 100% of the time. Once that repair message comes up, the MSI GUI completes the install successfully and after a reboot the vpn client works properly. at that point we see a vpn adapter repair operation/message and a request to reboot. To remedy the issue i have to first manually start the install via MSI, once the installer progress bar is up i then have to go into the vpncli.exe utility to manually connect to our head-end and download/enroll the users certificate.

this is obviously a frustrating issue for our remote workers, and requires manual intervention to fix it. After the failure, the SMC client appears to completely uninstall itself. some devices updated perfectly, while some others appeared to download the update, but then failed during the installation phase. In our case, it started when we put the version 4.4 client on our ASA to be pushed automatically to devices running out-dated SMC software. I am wondering if anyone else is seeing issues with their remote endpoints failing to auto-upgrade their secure mobility client (SMC) when pushed from their ASA head-end. I apologize if this isn't the correct sub for this post, but figured i'd start here as this is related to Cisco tech!
